ENG 283E Contemporary Global Cinema - This course will examine how contemporary films represent the global -- as struggle, domination, negotiation, competition, collaboration, romance, friendship, to name some. We will connect the themes of these films to broader concerns about migration, peace and justice, feminism, and capitalism. We will analyze how these films work formally considering aspects such as narrative, editing, cinematography, sound etc. as well as examining industrial questions of production and distribution. We will reflect on which visions of the global circulate and dominate. Lastly, we will consider how different industries-Hollywood, South Korean, Bombay, Nigerian, Hong Kong, Japanese, South African, Brazil, Argentina, Thailand --both compete and collaborate to access global markets and the ways in which streaming has reshaped film exhibition and reception.
