ENG 270 American Literature - This course considers American literary production from its "origins" until the present day, giving particular consideration to regional, transnational, diasporic, and hemispheric frameworks which complicate or outright elude national categories. Through this perspective, students will come to understand the nation, not as a stable unit of analysis but rather an entity whose frontiers, peripheries, constitutive units and identities were (and still are) constantly debated, defined, and redefined. Drawing from literary texts, historical documents, political philosophy, film, television, and comics in multiple languages, we will interrogate American cultural production in an interdisciplinary context while honing close reading skills fundamental to literary studies.
