ENG 228 British Literature II - This course is a sweeping survey of British literature after 1660. As such, it will cover the Restoration, 18th century, Romanticism, and the Victorian period. One major thread of our course will be to develop an understanding of the important shifts in genre and style that constitute this literary history-from Robinson Crusoe, to the French Revolution and its influence on the Romantic poets, to Dickens's fiction and Kipling's poetry. Our second central concern will be to use this literature to gain a better understanding of how the British have understood "society" throughout the turbulent centuries of modernity. What is a society, who counts, and how does literature reflect or constitute our communities? STUDENTS ARE WELCOME TO TAKE BRIT LIT II WHETHER OR NOT THEY'VE TAKEN BRIT LIT I
