ENG 200P Food Studies - We must all eat to survive, good nutrition is key to good health, and yet food can be about so much more. Proust famously starts his Remembrance of Things Past by biting into a Madeleine associated with many childhood memories. Through a range of texts and site-visits, this course examines the role food plays in culture, memory, community and identity, as well as its relationship to desire, pleasure, and health. The class is an interdisciplinary exploration of the role of food in art, history, culture, science, trade, and agriculture. The curriculum is not only theoretical and experiential, land-based and community-engaged. Readings, screenings, discussions, land-based and community engaged learning will inform our analysis. We will cook and eat together, learn from guest speakers and community members, and from each other.
