EML 491Practicum in College Teaching

This 4-credit course is offered each fall and spring semester to students who want to learn teaching-related skills in a practicum setting. Students apply and interview for the opportunity to be an English Speaking Assistant (ESA) in an EML class. After being selected, students must attend a mandatory pre-training workshop and an on-line training before the start of the assigned semester. Once the semester begins, students are expected to attend and participate in an assigned EML course, work in small groups with students, facilitate large group discussions, organize and facilitate a speaking event, plan and deliver a mini-lesson, write reflections, attend 3 workshops, and meet with the instructor outside of class throughout the semester. This facilitates a practical and theoretical exposure to Academic English Language teaching.
