Examination of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds of students and teachers and ways in which these differences affect learning and teaching in diverse educational settings. Includes critical analysis of prevailing monolingual ideologies and their impact on multilingual learners, and examines the history, theory, legislation, and research underpinning bi/multilingual education. Explores the nature of “education that is multicultural and multilingual” and its links to issues of school culture, educational policy, community relations, curriculum, classroom interactions, teaching styles, student learning, grouping practices, labeling, assessment, language acquisition, and bilingual program models. Addresses the need to develop strategies for the improvement of educational practice and prepares educators to teach multilingual students, focusing on second language acquisition theories, multiculturalism, culturally responsive instructional methods, and assessment strategies for diverse learners.
