Intro to Sustainable Energy

Catalog description

This course explores sustainable energy systems by examining fossil fuel impacts on climate and the limitations of traditional energy generation. It covers renewable sources of solar and wind, with detailed analysis of photovoltaic and wind power systems from physical principles at the device level to grid integration. Energy storage technologies are evaluated by time and capacity scales. Power transmission challenges and the electrification of buildings and transportation are also addressed. Throughout, students consider global energy resources, economic factors, and technical design to understand the future of energy systems. Students learn practical engineering practices through completion of a group project. Prerequisites: CHEM 111 and PHYS 132. Offered in the Fall.
