Prerequisites: Grades C or better in Econ 160 and college level statistics. This course uses economic methods to analyze various issues related to gender and racial differences. The central themes of this course are causality and policy evaluation. We will study various economic tools used to establish a causal relationship and do policy analysis. Using the developed economic tools, we will evaluate policies covering different aspects of gender and racial differences. Topics include education, employment, health, demography, time allocation between the household and the labor market, marriage, consequences of employment change for the family structure, theories of discrimination, and occupational and educational segregation. The course will involve problem-solving, reading articles from academic journals and policy documents, listening to podcasts, analyzing newspaper articles, data analysis using statistical software, and a group project. The main goal of this course is for students to develop the ability to apply economic tools and thinking to contemporary social issues. Students will deepen their knowledge about gender and racial issues, both in the developed world and developing countries, and be able to evaluate policy and news related to these topics.
