Catalog description

Introduction to computer networks and the Internet, including network architecture, protocols, standards, applications, and socket programming. Topics include the TCP/IP protocol suite, client-server and peer-to-peer models, network performance, Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), Domain Name System (DNS), protocol design and implementation issues, Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), User Datagram Protocol (UDP), router architecture, Internet Protocol (IP), Network Address Translation (NAT), routing protocols, MAC protocols, local area networks, switching, Address Resolution Protocol (ARP), wireless and mobile networks, and network security. Multiple programming team projects in C/C++. Generative AI is used in at most one project. Prerequisite: CS 350 or equivalent. Offered at least once every academic year.
