Catalog description

The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to a large network of physical objects embedded with sensors and actuators to monitor and optimize the performance of physical systems or environments. IoT challenges many classical approaches to computing and networking due to the power limitations of its devices. IoT devices communicate wirelessly with one another and with the larger Internet. So, what wireless protocols are available for IoT? And how do they work? This course will introduce the students to the different wireless protocols used in IoT. Additionally, the students will be able to analyze IoT application requirements to determine the suitable wireless technology. The students will also gain hands-on experience building IoT wireless protocols on real devices. We will cover several technologies, including Bluetooth Low Energy, LoRa, 5G, and Thread. Prerequisite: CS 320 or CS 350. Prerequisites must have a grade of C- or better. Typically offered once every academic year.
