Catalog description

Detailed analysis of a single text or author, to be determined by instructor. Purpose of the course is to understand the way in which a work or small set of works can represent an event in the history of letters, shifting the intellectual trajectory, historical context, and aesthetic tradition out of which they emerge. The class, that is, will rethink tradition and context from the site of an interruption or exception. Texts to be studied might include Flaubert’s Madame Bovary, Nietzsche’s Genealogy of Morals, or the films of Godard.
