The Art of Projection Practice

Catalog description

Projecting film and video outside of the theatrical setting opens up a wide range of practical and conceptual issues. How do environmental, institutional, and social placement of screens alter the meaning and experience of a moving image work? What happens when the screen refuses to be a “window” and the artist insists that its material and cultural qualities be in direct dialogue with the projected image. How can personally made as well as publicly found screens, of a variety of scales and materials, function? Must screens be static? What are the boundaries that can be pushed between narrative, documentary, and abstract moving image practice when projection is a primary concern rather than an afterthought? These ideas and questions will be explored through individual and group assignment, supported by readings and discussion of work by artists who engage with the artistic possibilities of projection. This class will work with analog and digital projectors and projection mapping software. Prerequisites: CINE 122, one 200-level and one 300-level production courses. Offered once a year.
