Cinema, Play, and Games is a film and video workshop exploring the creative potentials of limitations in practices of artmaking. Over the course of the semester, we will survey histories of play from surrealist exquisite corpses to Fluxus happenings, meeting pre-cinematic shadow plays and structuralist schemes. Examining makers and thinkers such as Nancy Holt, Max Ernst, William Greaves, Robert Breer, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, John Cage, Roger Caillois, Peggy Ahwesh, OJOBOCA, Nam Jun Paik, and Michael Snow, we will consider games of chance, make-believe, and rules that can bend. Informed by these encounters, students will develop a series of creative projects, honing their artistic voice through generative restraints and rigorous play.
