Binghamton University · 4 credits · UGRD

This course introduces students to the principles of Expanded Cinema, the art of the moving image exhibited beyond the conventional cinema. From lectures, discussions, and creative production assignments, students will learn about pre-cinema devices and ideas (e.g. magic lantern, panoramic painting, phenakistiscope, and zoetrope), while understanding the ideas of installation and performance art. Towards the end of the semester, students will exhibit and/or perform their expanded cinema projects as a group show, which might take place at a local art space off campus. This course can be taken instead of CINE 351. Prerequisites for Cinema students: CINE 121, 122, and 252, or consent of instructor. Cannot be taken concurrently with CINE 351, 352, or 353. Prerequisites for Art students: One ARTS 200-level studio course, or consent of instructor. A fee of $45 is associated with this course.
