Japanese Art Anime & Beyond
Binghamton University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
Mainstream Japanese animation, Anime, is popular in many different countries, and Japanese art animation is also well received, though only among scholars, film curators, and enthusiasts. Art animation is diverse in style and different from Anime in that the former is mostly created by an individual artist, while the latter usually requires a team of creators working for a film studio. Students will visit and stay in Tokyo for two weeks, have classes at Nihon University and learn the Japanese art animation, especially the trends of contemporary art animation, as well as traditional and contemporary Japanese culture, through lectures/discussions, screenings, workshops, and out-of-classroom activities, including museum visits. Students also will work on several assignments online before and after the Japan trip. Offered Summer Only.
