Film Theory

Catalog description

This course serves as an introductory survey of film theory’s own history as it has emerged alongside the history of film. Equal attention is paid to the classic texts of early and contemporary film theory and to the theoretical issues raised in each. Students can expect to develop skills in theoretical analysis and close-reading of both text and image that build on CINE 121 and prepare them for advanced courses in the Cinema Department. Some examples of theoretical approaches and traditions covered include apparatus theory, the Frankfurt school, feminist film theory, Soviet montage theory, film phenomenology, and others. Prerequisite: CINE 121. Offered regularly.
