This is a 2 credit class: Alternative Imagining Processes will broaden students understanding of physical film and expand their conceptual possibilities of creating in the film mode through different means. This 200 level course is a practical, hands-on class that will be concerned with emulsion-less forms of motion pictures. Students will gain historical context of experimental films that employ inventive, non-traditional ways of representation on celluloid. Class discussions, in class demonstrations, and individual projects will build upon this foundation. They will learn how to make film loops, thread and use 16mm projectors in performance. Practical applications begin with hand drawing on leader, creating loops of animation, to transferring abstract images directly onto clear leader using laser jet printers which leads into their final projects: a 2-3 minute leader film where they are encouraged to focus on color and movement and how the placement of leader onto formatted sheets will affect the end result. This class will broaden their understanding of physical film and expand their conceptual possibilities of creating in the film mode through different means.
