CHEM 511Techniques for Studying Solids

COURSE DESCRIPTION: An introduction to techniques used for the characterization of inorganic solid-state materials. Examples of topics include X-ray and synchrotron-based techniques, various spectroscopies, solid-state NMR, quantum dot and thermoelectric measurement, atomic-scale microscopies, surface and electrochemical analysis, and photovoltaic performance evaluation. The course consists of one complete instructional module for each technique. Student evaluation will be based on a final examination, quizzes, homework assignments, class participation, and related assessments. FORMAT: This course is taught concurrently as CHEM 411/CHEM 511/MSE 511. The final examination includes partially different questions for the 411- and 511-level sections. PREREQUISITE: Junior standing with comprehensive knowledge of chemistry and/or materials science.
