COURSE DESCRIPTION: Introduction to physical chemistry with an emphasis on biochemical applications. Includes the laws of thermodynamics, free energy, phase and chemical equilibria, chemical kinetics, enzyme kinetics, quantum mechanics, statistical thermodynamics and spectroscopic techniques. Does not fulfill requirements for the chemistry major BS, but fulfills the Physical Chemistry requirement for the Chemistry BA as well as for the chemistry major with a Biological Chemistry emphasis, for which it is required. FORMAT: Three lectures and one discussion session each week. BOOKS: Atkins and dePaula, PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY FOR THE LIFE SCIENCES, 2006. PREREQUISITE: CHEM 104/105/106 or CHEM 108 or 111 and MATH 226 & 227. COREQUISITE: PHYS 121 CHEM 361 is the required course for CHEM BS with Emphasis in Biological Chemistry. Chemistry BA majors can take either CHEM 351 or CHEM 361. CHEM 351 and 361 are both introductory physical chemistry courses covering the same subject, albeit with different emphases and examples. Therefore, students can obtain credit for only one of these courses, and if one is on their record, they cannot register for the other."
