Catalog description

This course introduces the fundamental principles of thermodynamics and its applications on biomolecules and systems in life science. Topics covered include energy and its transformation, the first law and second laws of thermodynamics, the Gibbs free energy, statistical thermodynamics, binding equilibria, and reaction kinetics. Each topic has been organized to be highly relevant to biology and biochemistry in living organisms. Lecture 3 hours per week. Prerequisite: MATH 323, MATH 324, PHYS 131. Course offered in the Fall.
