In this introductory course, students will develop technical skills in creating fiber/textile structures and manipulating textile surfaces. Using both traditional and experimental materials, students will explore a wide variety of fiber techniques. These may include felting, rope-making, spinning, embroidery, quilting, 3D construction, crochet, tapestry weaving, immersion dyeing, block printing, and screen printing. Assigned readings and class discussions will address textiles' relationship to labor, obsession, identity, decoration, architecture, and functionality; including fiber's role in the expanded field of contemporary art.
