Catalog description

An introduction to art, visual culture, and built environments from circa 1600 to the present. We will trace developments in cultural production alongside the emergence of a new global order of modernity that transformed political, economic, and social life in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. At a time of increasingly rapid technological change, colonial expansion, and political revolution, we will focus on the role of images, objects, buildings, and spaces in giving form to new modes of experience and in structuring relations of race, gender, and class across an interlinked globe.
