Biomarkers:Measure & Interpret

This course provides students an in-depth understanding of what makes a biomarker, how some commonly-used biomarkers measured, and their appropriate interpretation, with examples from biological anthropology and global public health. Students will learn the principles of enzyme immunoassay (or enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, ELISA), how techniques developed for clinical settings can be adapted for broader use, how new biomarkers are developed, and how biomarker definitions for disease outcomes are evaluated. Hands-on instruction in laboratory methods and data analysis techniques are large components of this course. Permission of Instructor. Offered regularly in the fall.
