A comprehensive survey of the methods and theories employed to recover archaeological data and interpret the past through material culture. Two major emphases throughout the course are archaeology as anthropology, and the relevance of archaeology to modern human society. The course explores archaeology as it has developed over the last two centuries and considers the research questions, data, methods, and logic used by archaeologists to make interpretations about the past. The course also explores how archaeologists study diverse human experiences and build interpretations about the lifeways, technologies, economies, social relationships of people in the past, and why this matters to people in the present.
