Social anthropology is, most broadly, concerned with the complex relationships between people and the social and cultural circumstances in which they live. In this introduction to the field we will focus not so much on learning about other cultures (although we will draw examples from a range of different societies), but rather we will learn about anthropology and about society and culture by applying anthropological approaches to social structures, cultural events, practices, meanings and experiences with which we already have some familiarity. This experience of trying out anthropological approaches will prepare students for investigating social and cultural phenomena in other cultural settings. Format may vary by sections.
