Catalog description

This course entails a study of the reception of–that is, the treatment and responses to–the history, literatures, and other cultural products of Ancient Greece and Rome in the United States, with special attention to how these products were appropriated in politics and popular culture and continue to shape how we see ourselves and the past. We will consider how various forms of oppression impacted (and impact) the lives of the inhabitants of the USA by looking at ancient and modern notions of slavery, otherness, and misogyny.
