Research Methods in Africana

Catalog description

AFST 301 is a required course for all Africana Studies majors. It is to be taken before other three hundred level courses, and passing with a C+ is required to advance to more advanced classes. The course covers common research methods used in the humanities and social sciences, including qualitative and basic quantitative approaches. Beginning from basic approaches to logic and inductive reasoning, the course explores a variety of “how tos”, including: sharpening memory and focus, understanding complex arguments, reading deeply on a topic, identifying a research question, identifying fallacies in thinking, and the function of critical inquiry to the project of Africana Studies. Prerequisite: AFST 101 and at least one other AFST course. No Freshmen permitted. Offered every spring semester.
