Binghamton University · UGRD

This course is designed for students interested in developing skills for future work that may involve community engagement/public humanities/digital humanities projects. For this course, we will do our study and research in the form of case studies. We will study and evaluate cases of community and civic projects that heavily emphasize public participation and facilitation of voice via digital platforms. Our work includes study of ethics and best practices and critical study of digital rhetoric, skills, and resources that are deployed for these projects. Along the way, we also will draw from theories and applications that help us to read the limitations, vulnerabilities, and biases (often invisible to the untrained eye and ears) of various digital formats and platforms. For those who would like to learn some components of digital engagement for future work, this initial course should help prepare you to participate in diverse initiatives in a more critically informed and skilled manner. To synchronize our research with in depth cultural learning, we will focus our case studies on initiatives that include outreach to peoples of Asian descent. This class emphasizes collaboration, research, and experimentation. Requirements: Two oral presentations and a final project.
