Catalog description

This course explores identity, personality, family, and relationships as they are represented in film and fiction from Taiwan, China, and Hong Kong. These films and stories represent identity as inseparable from interpersonal antagonism and conflict (familial, social, economic, gendered, sexual, etc.). Requirements include readings in psychoanalytic and other approaches to identity. Classroom sessions are devoted to the review, analysis, and interpretation of the readings and films. All lectures, readings, and films are presented in English; No knowledge of Chinese history, culture, or languages is required.
