This course examines gendered belonging and social transformations in Korea since the Chosŏn Dynasty (1392-1910). We explore intersections of race and class with gendered mobilizations and migrations, constructions of femininity and masculinity, status, and activities of individuals in broader contexts of dynastic change, colonial rule and occupation, national division, war, economic restructuring, missionary and social movements, and global capitalism. Classes will be conducted in discussion and workshop formats, with material drawn from historical documents, secondary scholarship, film, literature, and other media. Students will also participate in independent and collaborative projects. No prior knowledge of Korean history or language is required.
