Catalog description

This course focuses on the development and practice of religion and the relationship with cultural practices throughout Korean history. We will examine the major religions of premodern Korea, including shamanism, Buddhism, Daoism, and Confucianism along with the more recently introduced Christian worldviews. It is hoped that this survey will enable students to appreciate the diversity of premodern society and the functions that these worldviews filled in the lives of the people, depending upon one’s age, gender, and social status.
