Contemporary Chinese Cinemas

Catalog description

This course introduces movies from China, Hong Kong, & Taiwan, viewed in class. Core requirements include short (3-6 page) written interpretations of 4 films, and 2 take-home exams. Lectures and readings cover Chinese film history, prominent directors and films, cinematic terminology, and special focus on the relationship between cinematic form and content. All lectures, readings, and films are presented in English, knowledge of Chinese language or history is not required.
