Catalog description

This course is an introduction to Asian American studies. We will consider the idea of “Asian America” as it relates to the United States, the Americas, and the world. Our concern will be sociological and historical, examining issues of race, ethnicity, and nationality on the one hand and migration and diaspora on the other - paying particular attention to when and how migrants from East, South, and Southeast Asia came to be seen as “Asian American”. We will also explore how Asian American issues influenced social/cultural considerations from language and food to artistic expression in a variety of media.
