This course offers a survey of critical approaches to the analysis of media and its impact on society, with a focus on examples in the Asian context. It sets out to promote information and media literacy skills for assessing and conducting original research on a range of media products. We will look at the predominant theories and concepts that help scholars and critics to make sense of media. We will read, watch, discuss, and analyze a variety of media products re-presenting aspects of Asian societies and experiences. As we interrogate these sites of cultural production, we will apply a diverse set of methodologies and theoretical traditions. These approaches to media and cultural analysis open up a wide diversity of perspectives, sometimes in disagreement with one another, over how to study mass mediated culture in Asia and beyond.
