Social Justice and Film

Catalog description

This course is designed to foster the exploration of various social problems through the lens of media; specifically narrative fiction films, some television programming, and feature length documentaries. Students will be asked to consider their understanding of these issues through their experience of the films and with weekly readings. Over the course of the term, students will be introduced to a series of contemporary films designed to deepen their appreciation for the complexity and lived experience of oppression and injustice, in a variety of forms, within the United States. They will be called to consider the ways in which media might be better used to inform and underpin advocacy efforts.
