Early Evolution of Interiors explores the development of interior environments from antiquity through the Renaissance. Students examine how art, architecture, furniture, decorative arts, and material culture shaped changing styles and spatial practices. The course places these developments within broader historical, political, social, and cultural contexts, with emphasis on interior design’s roots in furniture-making and craftsmanship. Students learn to recognize key characteristics of major periods, analyze precedent and cultural influence, and communicate historical understanding through research-based visual, written, and verbal work.
