History of Design and Culture I investigates the roots of modern design thinking through the connected evolution of art, fashion, interiors, furniture, decorative arts, and architecture from Romanticism to early industrialization (c. 1780-1851). Students examine how global exchange, technological innovation, and changing ideas of identity transformed what people wore and how they inhabited space. The course emphasizes material culture, exploring how textiles, ornament, craft traditions, and emerging mechanization shaped both dress and domestic environments.
