Catalog description

This didactic and practicum course provides the knowledge and supervised clinical practice necessary for advanced practice in the care of adult and geriatric patients with acute, chronic, and critical illness. Content emphasizes the role of the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AG-ACNP) in the assessment, differential diagnosis, and management of complex, high-acuity health conditions across diverse care settings. The didactic component focuses on advanced health assessment, diagnostic reasoning, differential diagnosis, interpretation of diagnostic and laboratory studies, and the application of technologic and therapeutic interventions for critically ill adult and older adult populations, including young adults (late adolescents and emancipated minors). The practicum component provides supervised clinical experiences that support the application of evidence-based, ethical, and person-centered care through direct patient management under the guidance of qualified preceptors. Emphasis is placed on interprofessional collaboration, systems-based practice, quality and safety, health equity, and clinical decision-making that considers patient outcomes, resource utilization, and cost-effective care. This course prepares students to assess, diagnose, and manage episodic, chronic, and life-threatening conditions in adult-gerontology populations. (225 practicum hours required)
