This course provides an in-depth introduction to the Child Life Specialist (CLS) profession, aligning with the guidelines set by the Association of Child Life Professionals (ACLP). Students will explore the foundational principles of child life practice, with a focus on evidence-based psychosocial care for children and families in healthcare and community settings. The course will cover the official ACLP documents and scope of practice, ensuring students develop a comprehensive understanding of the core competencies required for a Child Life Specialist. Key topics include: History, Role, and Scope of Practice of the Child Life Profession; The Association of Child Life Professionals (ACLP) & Certification Guidelines; Impact of Illness, Injury, and Healthcare Experiences on Child Development; Family-Centered Care & Interdisciplinary Collaboration in Pediatric Healthcare; Preparation & Coping Strategies for Medical Procedures, End of Life Care, and Healthcare Experiences; Cultural Competency, Ethical Considerations; and Professional Standards in Child Life. Students will gain essential skills in family-centered care, developmental support, procedural preparation, and coping techniques, which align with the ACLP-required content areas for Child Life coursework.
