Catalog description

This course provides an in-depth exploration of the psychological, emotional, social, and physical development of children from middle childhood through adolescence (ages 9-18). Emphasis is placed on understanding how health, illness, environmental factors, family dynamics, and cultural influences shape development during this critical period. Topics covered include cognitive and moral development, identity formation, emotional regulation, peer relationships, risk-taking behaviors, and the impact of chronic illness or disability on adolescent growth. Students will analyze typical and atypical developmental patterns, examine the role of schools, families, and healthcare systems, and develop strategies to support healthy transitions into adulthood.Through case studies, observational activities, research-based discussions, and applied assignments, students will gain a well-rounded perspective on middle childhood and adolescent development and explore interventions that foster resilience, mental well-being, and physical health.
