This survey of American history examines major themes in U.S. and Kentucky history including encounters between Native American populations, Europeans and Africans, the colonial period; national expansion and sectionalism; the Civil War & Reconstruction, urbanization and industrialization; the rise of the U.S. as a world power; the Great Depression and World Wars; the Cold War & Vietnam; and the origins of contemporary international crises. The course will examine the political, social, cultural, and diplomatic development of the country using a wide variety of textual sources to prepare elementary education majors for the social studies portion of the Kentucky elementary education praxis.
