This lower‑level course introduces students to the fundamental principles and practices of shielded metal arc welding. Topics include the identification and use of welding electrodes, base metals, and SMAW welding machines, along with safe handling and operation of oxyacetylene cutting equipment. Students learn essential safety procedures, electrode classifications and selection, and the proper setup of SMAW power sources. Hands‑on instruction emphasizes developing basic welding skills, including arc starts and stops and producing quality welds in the flat position. The course also covers introductory weld testing procedures. Designed for beginners, this class provides the foundational skills needed for further study in welding technology. Prerequisites: WELD 50A and WELD 56.
