Introduction to Teaching and Learning in K-12 Education

This course introduces students to the concepts and issues related to teaching diverse learners in today’s contemporary schools, transitional-kindergarten through grade 12. Topics will include teaching as a profession and career, historical and philosophical foundations of the American education system, contemporary educational issues, California’s content standards and frameworks, and teacher performance standards. In addition to class time, the course requires a minimum of 45 hours of structured fieldwork in public school elementary classrooms that represent California’s diverse student population, and includes cooperation with at least one carefully selected and campus-approved certificated classroom teacher. Note: A clear criminal background fingerprint check (Live Scan) and a clear tuberculosis (TB) test are required prior to participation in the observation segment of this class. A misdemeanor and/or felony conviction (including DUI) may result in a student’s inability to be assigned to a school for observation experiences. There will be a materials fee of $35 for the Live Scan and $20 for the TB test/clearance. Recommended Preparation: ENGL C1000
