Catalog description

Contemporary political discussion of markets has focused on the isolation and amorality of unconstrained capitalism and the coercion and totalitarian nature of unconstrained socialism. Both are undesirable in theory, but the theories themselves overlook the more complicated reality in the corruption of both market institutions celebrated by capitalists and government institutions celebrated by socialists. This course sails between the Scylla and Charybdis by investigating the role markets play in civil soci ety with an emphasis on localism, social responsibility, and long -term health of the community —broadly understood.
