PSYCHIATRIC-MENTAL HEALTH NURSING

Catalog description

An introduction to theory and concepts of Psychiatric-Mental Health nursing with emphasis on the therapeutic use of self and self-awareness to enhance relationships with mental health consumers as well as developing the professional nurse's role in working with the community. The therapeutic nurse -patient relationship will provide the basis for exploring factors which contribute to stress, maladaptive behavior, and mental illness. The student will also explore the role of Psychiatric -Mental Health nurses working collaboratively with the community and an interdisciplinary team. Conceptual frameworks that focus on mental health care will be studied in both the classroom and clinical settings. Concurrent course is NURS 350 C where selected inpatient mental health settings, outpatient mental health settings, and community -based agencies will be utilized for clinical practice. Prerequisites: Admission to the Nursing Program, NURS 200, NURS 215, NURS 310, NURS 315, NURS 330, NURS 335.
