This course will examine the historical background and history of the Holocaust, the systematic persecution and mass murder of six million Jews throughout Germany and Nazi-occupied Europe by the German Nazi government during World War II. In so doing, students will discuss Jewish life in Germany before World War II, the historical roots of Nazi anti -Semitism, Adolf Hitler and the rise of the Nazi Party, the formulation and implementation of Nazi anti-Jewish legislation, including the infamous Nuremburg laws of 1935, the establishment of Jewish ghettos and Nazi death camps, and the planning and carrying out of the “Final Solution,” the extermination of Europe’s Jews. Special attention will be paid to the memory of the Holocaust and the various means of representing the Holocaust in Western culture. Prerequisites: HIST 101 and HIST 102.
