Catalog description

This course provides a basic overview of the health policy and political process as it relates to health care in the United States, the organization and issues of the healthcare system, and healthcare economics. Each section focuses on the new healthcare environment, healthcare reform, trends in healthcare delivery, quality and safety, as well as other topics in today’s healthcare policy environment, exploring the current and historical issues with the U. S. healthcare system and alternatives for future policy. The course reviews the political process that influences planning in various healthcare settings, presents accepted methods of economic and financial analysis, and addresses ethical and other value considerations that must enter into the health policy process. Finally, the course looks at the roles, skills and leadership that health professionals can bring to the policymaking process in their local and national communities.
