Practical experience in the techniques of imaginative writing. May include fiction, nonfiction, poetry, screenwriting, or drama. Topics may vary. Possible markets for creative writing to be discussed. Creative Writing - Introduction to Children's/Young Adult Literature - This course introduces students to the craft of writing literature for children. Students will explore various forms of children’s literature, including picture books, early readers, middle-grade fiction, and young adult fiction. Emphasis will be placed on creating engaging stories that are relevant to young audiences through writing exercises, peer workshops, examinations of craft, and reading classic and contemporary works. Students will develop their skills in crafting literature for young audiences. Students will actively engage in the local literary community and prepare and submit work for publication. No prior experience in writing children’s literature is required. Creative Writing - Introduction to Creative Nonfiction - This course introduces students to the craft of writing creative nonfiction, blending factual storytelling with literary style. Students will explore various nonfiction forms, focusing on voice, narrative structure, and the balance between truth and creativity through writing exercises, peer workshops, and reading classic and contemporary works. Students will actively engage in the local literary community and prepare and submit work for publication. No prior experience in creative nonfiction is required. Creative Writing - Introduction to Fiction - This course introduces students to the craft of writing fiction. Students will explore various elements of storytelling, including character development, plot structure, dialogue, and narrative voice.
