Catalog description

The principles and concepts of community public health and dental health education emphasizing community assessment, educational planning, implementation, and evaluation including methods and materials used in teaching dental health education in various community settings. The course includes an overview of basic research principles to facilitate analysis of professional and scientific literature. Students examine how social determinants of health influence oral health disparities and health inequities in underserved populations. Cultural proficiency, health literacy, social responsibility and dental indices are also addressed. Student experiences include service-learning with off-site community-based organizations, student presentations, group activities, and volunteer experiences in the community. The course is designated as a service-learning (SVL) course.
