Clinical - Surgical First Assistant I

This course provides supervised clinical experience in the perioperative environment, enabling students to apply theoretical knowledge and laboratory-acquired skills to real-world surgical practice. Students function as surgical assistants under the supervision of qualified preceptors and surgical staff, demonstrating increasing independence and professional competency across multiple surgical specialties. In accordance with the Core Curriculum for Surgical Assisting (4th ed.), students must complete a minimum of 140 documented surgical procedures in the first assistant role. A minimum of 20 procedures must be performed in general surgery, with additional cases distributed across at least two other specialties to ensure broad exposure. Case experiences may include cardiovascular, thoracic, orthopedic, neurosurgical, obstetric/gynecologic, urologic, plastic, minimally invasive, robotic, and transplant procedures, among others. Through progressive clinical assignments, students develop proficiency in surgical site exposure, tissue handling, hemostasis, and wound closure while integrating anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology into intraoperative decision-making. Emphasis is placed on aseptic technique, teamwork, ethical conduct, and effective communication with the surgical team to optimize patient outcomes. Upon completion, students will demonstrate the ability to apply advanced cognitive knowledge, psychomotor skills, and affective professionalism consistent with the standards of practice for the Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA). Proof of Health insurance will be required for all clinical courses.
